D1 codes.

The repair shop says the 1995 D1 needs a black box installed to read codes. Can't be so! Is there some way? Does Rob have a code reader for this thing? Apparently the engine runs fine but keeps quitting and without reading codes the guy is going to have to throw money at it till it's fixed without knowing where to start throwing the money first.

I can buy it cheap and would if I knew I could find out what was wrong with it.

Maybe that's the black box the mechanic says is installed on the US Discovery but not the Canadian Discovery. This one is apparently missing a black box. I don't know how big of a black box but it isn't under the passenger seat like it says in the link and like where the mechanic was looking for it.

My Disco is a 1997. It has the OBD connector under the dash on the driver's side (LHD). All NAS Discos should have it. I've got a generic code reader and it works fine for the basics (I.e. Engine). You need something Rover specific if you want to get into the ABS or other exotica.

Codes are four digit and lists of their meanings are an easy google search away.

the 95 has OBD1. they went to OBD2 in 96. The 95 has the box under the passenger seat that blinks out the fault codes. Hard to believe it is not there, you may find one at a junk yard. the repair manual will have this part shown in part locations and on the wiring diagram.

If I had one of these trucks, this would be job #1. Being able to troubleshoot with a computer interface makes life much easier.
