reminder - change yer damn oil!

#1 Post by bhoult » Tue Nov 26, 2013 8:17 am

On my way to the head gaskets in our recently purchased Reggie, I have found evidence of some pretty horrible maintenance history. We didn't pay much for Reggie - and for that I am now doubly pleased. At any rate, maintaining PCV components and changing the oil frequently helps a great deal in avoiding the baked on gluck that I now have to remove from my poor RRC motor.

The cam, lifters and main bearings in this poor old 3.5 looked too hammered to reassemble without a complete replacement. Gord'n at Lamorna was nice enough to part with a workable 3.9 so I'm going with that instead. I'm putting in new HGs and associated gaskets - as well as putting on new front and rear crankshaft seals. The cam and lifters in the 3.9 still look really good, so I'm excited about having a little more power to pull the BC passes should I be lucky enough to head up that way again. One thing I'll need to add at some point is an oil cooler. The 88 rad wasn't fitted with an oil cooler in the side tank. It seems like that might be another advantage the 3.9s have over the 3.5s.

Don't get too excited. I've a 4.0 Disco and it's STILL pretty leisurely in the passes.

:) Yeah - it's still a big car with a little motor - but our trip up to the NWC was pretty funny - shifting down to 2nd to maintain 30mph!

Wow! Knackered?

My 65.5 hp (when new) diesel 2.5 n/a only very occasionally has to go that far down. Usually I don't have to shift below third or go much slower than 60 KMH. Okay, sometimes it is slower than 60 but very rarely to 50 (30 mph).

driving between Spences Bridge and Cache Creek [ going north ] and from Pemberton to Lillooet in my 86 LR90 2.5 n/a [ 107000 kms on the odometer ] has seen me downshift to 2nd gear several times on these trips [ with the odd smoke out ] .
i attribute this to the extra weight added to my original stock 90 such as a winch / custom bumper , compressor , 3 gal tank , dual batteries , lockers , lots of tools & spare parts , Engel fridge , body protection for the t-case and fuel tank , rock sliders , larger tires , and a swing out tire carrier with a hi-lift and 20l full jerry can attached .

off-road @ 3-4 mph it performs ! gerry

LOL. I have to agree, Highway 99 from Pemberton to Lillooet, going up THE hill had me down to second gear and 20 kph on a few of the corners. The Quoqahallah between Kelowna and Hope took me almost an hour longer than the GPS trip planner said it should. Drove uphill for a lot of miles roaring in third gear at 60 kph with the occasional dip down to 55. Not bad for a highway posted at 110. I couldn't imagine a Range Rover ever having to go as slow as the LR90 on the highway.

My old series truck ('62 88) could pull Chinook pass in WA going eastbound to the summit in 3rd at 40mph even loaded for camping after I rebuilt the 2.25. I think before the rebuild, it was a 3-2-3-2 shift pattern at about 30 mph. The thing about the hwy 5 passes between Hope and Kamloops is that they are so loooong.

The 3.9 is shaping up nice. I have the heads prepped and ready to clamp on over new gaskets. My hope is to have it up to Founders Day replete with (to us) engine and rock sliders.

This is a reason I wasn't comfortable just putting in new HGs and bolting it back together. The lifters and cam were so hammered there was no way the bearings were serviceable, so it would have been a $1500 rebuild at a minimum. The 3.5 could be reborn as a 4.2 at some point, but I'll work on just one engine at a time for now :bounce: Besides - I've been smitten with the desire for a Disco with a Diesel :bom:
