GoPro vs Sony opinion?

#1 Post by Rob » Wed Nov 20, 2013 5:33 pm

I've been looking at a camera for rover runs and for boating trips. I thought that GoPro was about the only game in town but more recently I see that Sony has come-up with some competition (Costco has been selling them). I've done an intenet search and see that both have their pros and cons but I'm wondering if any of the rover community have experience in this area and can make some recommendations. My interest in the Sony is that it seems to have better vibration dampening. Comments about your experiences with these cameras would be appreciated.

Regards, Rob

Hi Rob,

With my(limited) experience with the Gopro, I would say it's fun to have one, but unless your making a lot of movies and posting them or shooting high def videos for work it's overkill. The Gopro is VERY good at marketing and it definately isn't the be all end all in this market. Many of the claims they make about their camera's are simply not true or not accessible to the common user.....yet.
I would say buy a cheaper Sony and try it, and if you get it from Costco then you can always return it once you realize your not using it, and then go buy some shiny new Land Rover parts instead!

I'm in a position where I share a gopro with my business partner so it make's owning one a little bit more practical.

Had a GoPro, used it 20 mins & then sold it all.

Had a 32Gb SD card which it filled in 20mins even at the lowest settings.

I then tried to down load the video to my computer, but my computer is too old to support thier program.
When I just down loaded to a file, the videos were all in slow motion.

I found the settings hard to figure out & use as you must scroll through them all every time you want to change something.

They do have a ton of stuff to add to the camera, but the camera is still very basic & doesn't have a zoom nor display screen which must be bought seperate.

My Pentax digital camera takes just as good video (except no wide angel) & is waterproof without buying another case.

I have just found the Genius DVR-FHD590 Dash Cam.
It is a very cheap camera (in price) with most functions as the GoPro except that it is not water proof.

This isn't a big thing for me as the video is just as good from inside the vehicle.

Also their program to down load & edit is very basic & similar to Windows Movie Maker.

Staples has them for $149.98.

Thanks for the info... the dash cam would be great for the rover (price is good) but I am also looking to use it on the water so being waterproof is important. Anyone tried the Costco Sony Cam yet?

Cheers, Rob

What do we think to this? Seems smart

I came across a smartarse bicyclist sporting a camera a couple of weeks ago. The lorry pulling out of the farmyard stopped to wave me on and blocked his side of the road, but loopy man-in-tights coming the other way never had a thought I might be approaching and set about passing the nose of the lorry. When he saw me, he had a choice of riding into me or falling off. He chose the latter and ended up sprawling in the muck with his bike on top of him.

I bet that footage never sees the light of day...

I just bought the 1080p GearPro version for $55. Works great for me with my Land Rover and mountain biking:

I went with a contour.

Can be made to be waterproof (is decent in the rain with no mods) and has a tripod screw mount as well as their own mounting points. I went with a rammount setup. The reason I went with theirs is ususally i have it mounted to helmet for snowboarding, and buttons suck when I cant see it.
Controls are simple and BIG so they work with gloves on, or while leaning out the window turning on the cam mounted to rollcage. One big sliding thing.
Forward for ON, back for OFF, with a nice loud BEEP to tell you that it took it. KISS controls won me over, and the HD quality is decent. Check it out (ive had mine for a few years now, and still use it lots).
