Carburetor Crazies!!

#1 Post by Hectorious » Tue Nov 12, 2013 3:12 pm

Okay, so I have what I think is a Holley 5210C carburetor in my new-to-me Series 2A. Hot or cold, whenever I slow down to an idle with the nose of the truck pointed even slightly down hill, I stall out. With the nose up, facing uphill, not as bad. I have to tap the accelerator to keep from stalling. Any idea what might be going on? If you do, dumb it down if you can, as my knowledge of carbs is very limited. Thanks,

Chris

Never heard of that carb.

Here is a link to a pdf describing it in detail: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/man ... uretor.pdf

It seems they were used on pintos and the chev vega. Engines were 2.3 litre and around 90 hp so not too far off a Land Rover 2.25. Apparently it is a copy of the Weber 32/36.

Teri Ann strongly recommends against the Weber 32/36 carb on the Land Rover.

So I guess the dumbed down version is swap to Zenith, Solex or Weber 34ich, all of which have their own issues but can work well if properly fitted.

If I had to guess what is going on with your carb I'd say the floats are either rotten and not closing the inlet valve properly, the inlet valve itself is goobered, idle valve could be clogged/worn, throttle shaft could be leaking air........

You really need to give a lot more information (running rich, running lean, same at idle as cruise, how is acceleration, have you checked everything on the ignition system), but unless you enjoy farting around with carbs, I'd get a rebuilt one of the proper variety and swap it.

Perfect, thanks. "It's goobered" is the perfect level of carburetor technical knowledge I was hoping for. Yeah, I had known it was a non-original swap-out, and was toying with the idea of replacing it with the stock Zenith. Considering the cost of a rebuild kit, the time to do it myself, then the cost to have it done right, I might just go for the new one. May I assume they come relatively factory-tuned out of the box, or will it still need fiddling?

Depends on what you get and where you get it. Also depends on how your previous owner swapped the non stock item on. Linkage could be wrong, adapter to intake manifold could be wrong. If you get a properly rebuilt zenith it shouldn't be too bad. Teri Ann really likes the rochester from the chev 216. You can get that at lordco.

I have a series 1 with the 2.0 IOE engine. I went with the Weber 34 ICH from Pierce manifolds. It definitely needed some jetting changed to get to a reasonable state of tune. I temporarily installed a wide band oxygen sensor to get a good handle on what the mixture was doing at different points while driving. made choosing jets much easier. Also had to fabricate an adapter for the manifold and linkage. Others have had consistent problems with the Weber 34 ICH on the 2.25.

If you have a zenith already, I would highly recommend rebuilding it. Its a very easy Carb to learn on, just make sure you buy an original Carb rebuild kit as the aftermarket ones are questionable. The other option is buy a new Webber and slap it on, a lot of people dot like the Webber but personally I've had very good experience with them. Swapping to a solex isn't easy as you will need to change you throttle linkage operation.

Cost of both options:
New Webber for about $250. Zenith rebuild kit $40.

Glad the clutch kit worked out.
