So I've finally run through the cache of oil filters that came with my 109. Does anyone know if the oil filters for the 2.25 petrol engine are available at the local parts stores? I have the shorter (5.5 inch) canister.

Yes! Look at splurging to upgrade to the Rocky Mountain adapter, then just spin on the most common filter available. (I have no connection to Rocky Mountain Products other than as a customer.)
The element type you need is what I used to have, I bought it at any automotive outlet I happened to be near.

So, here are the prices I was quoted:
Lordco: $13 for the Fram
NAPA: $18.49 for the Cat
Rovalution: $10.76 for genuine LR.
Guess I'm making a side-trip next time I'm in North Van.
