What vehicles have you owned?

#1 Post by DaveB » Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:04 am

I heard from my Dad yesterday that they'd bought a new car, and it got me thinking, I wonder how many I've owned. Well a few minutes with a spreadsheet and I had a list. Then I had to go back to it a half dozen times to add additional ones I'd forgotten. This'll give you some insights into my twisted personality...

YEAR - MAKE/MODEL - COLOUR - DESCRIPTION

1973 Mercury Capri Maroon - wrecked - My first car, Grandpa Howat assisted with financing much to Mom and Dad's dismay. My sister drove it into a house. (not the full story!)

1972 Chev Vega Blue - wrecked - It didn't like taking jumps

1968 Envoy Epic Blue - wrecked - A rust bucket - Destroyed during dirt track fun

1980 Toyota Tercel Beige - sold - Purchased new. 6 months in I didn't like the payment so sold to friend Rod

1973 Ford Pinto Hatchback Green/White - wrecked - Rod traded me this as part payment. Rear-ended and written off

1960 Karmann Ghia Yellow - sold - Restored and drove for years. Cal look lowered, loud

1971 VW Type 3 Wagon Orange - flipped - Owned for about a week. Got it cheap not running and repaired and traded for Caprice

1973 Chevrolet Caprice Black - flipped - Owned for about a month, then traded for VW Type 4

1974 VW Type 4 Wagon Silver - sold - Drove for about 6 months

1951 VW Split Window Beetle Blue - sold - Big expensive restoration project. Finally sold at close to break-even

1970 Fiat 850 Spyder Lime Green - sold - Was gonna be my VW powered dragster. Just took up Dad's driveway instead

1965 VW Bus White - sold - Drove for a year or two

1960 VW Bus 21 window Red/White - sold - Drove for about 3 years

1957 VW Bus 23 window Brown - left behind - From Dawson Creek. Left behind when moved to PG in 1993. No idea where this has ended up.

1954 VW Beetle Silver-Blue - flipped - Bought at cultus Lake. Sold a week later to Alberta where it was restored

1966 VW Bus Double Cab White/Green - stolen - Drove for years, then ripped off during painting process, Mt. Vernon, WA

1973 Toyota Corona Mk II Green - left behind - Grandma's car, not running. left behind after move to PG.

1989 Mercury Topaz Blue - lease return - Leased new and drove for 6 years

1986 Oldsmobile Omega Maroon - sold - Dad's work lease return. Drove till transission went, then sold

1990 Ford Aerostar Blue - lease return - Drove for 2 year lease

1988 Toyota 4Runner Silver-Blue - traded - Drove for 3 years from 1994

1997 Nissan Pathfinder Gold - traded - Purchased new. Drove for 3 years. Traded for pickup

1996 Chev Pickup 4x4 diesel Silver - sold - tons of fuel injection problems.

1966 Land Rover Series IIa 88" Blue - still own - purchased in 1997. rebuilt and repaired regularly. Still earns its keep

1996 Mazda MX6 Green - traded - Drove for 2 years then traded on Land Rover Discovery II

1999 Land Rover Discovery II Gold - still own - My favourite vehicle of all. Still drive it.

1988 Peugeot 504 Diesel Silver - dismantled - From Dave Tebbutt, this gave its engine to the IIa 88" and the rest was sold off

1988 Land Rover Range Rover Green - sold - Now a 200tdi and daily driven - body rusted and sold on for parts

1994 Ford Contour - piece of shit money pit with no heat. Drove for 1 winter.

1996 Land Rover Discovery Blue - dismantled - parted out rough truck

2008 Honda Civic Silver - traded in - daily driver with no personality

1953 Land Rover 80 Green - sold - From Grindrod/Sicamous. Bullet holes right through it. Runs, but rough around the edges

1951 Land Rover 80 Green - sold - Being preserved. From Enderby. Named McCready

1956 Land Rover S1 86 Green - sold - Got with 80" deal. Needs restoration.

1956 Land Rover S1 86 parts Blue - sold - Got with 80" deal. Too far gone, parts only.

1958 Land Rover S1 109 pickup Green - sold - Got with 80" deal. Very Good body, but needs restoration.

1951 Land Rover 80 Blue - Prince Caspian

2006 Nissan XTrail Gold - Daily driver. No Frills or thrills but not a bad car

1988 Range Rover - Silver

1954 Land Rover 86" - Green - Vinny

1999 Land Rover Discovery II - Hilary - for parts

1997 Land Rover Discovery I - Monty - undergoing engine overhaul

Go ahead. Compile a list of your own. Reveal your automotive personality to us! I found it to be a good bit of fun thinking about the things I'd done and places I'd been in all the vehicles. There are some pretty interesting (at least to me  ) stories that go with some of them.

And if you're interested in taking one of the Series 1 trucks off the list, just let me know...!

cheers, Dave

35 vehicles, and how old are you? Haha.

1968 Dodge Dart Slant 6 - First car - Sold for a profit after many youthful adventures.

1988 Volkswagen Fox Wagon - A much more practical car than Dart. Took me to the parts store to repair the Dart.

1983 Volkswagen GTI - The most enjoyable car I have ever owned. Regret selling...

1988 Nissan Multi AWD - Used extensively for skiing transit. Gift from my Uncle. Handled many "offroad" adventures. Electrical issues and rust made me junk it.

1984 Volkswagen GLI Coupe - Bought for pennies, and never driven. Sold for profit.

1978 Volkswagen Rabbit - Gas-mizer, and reliable.

1968 Land Rover SIIA 88" - First and only Land Rover owned. "Poor student" restoration. Sold to Land Rover friend.

1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel - Gift, and parted out.

1976 Scirocco - Bought for pennies, and sold for a profit. Driven sparingly.

2002 Volkswagen Golf TDI - Still own - School transportation.

I guess I am not much better than you Dave. 21 years, 10 cars. Or five years driving, 10 cars?

Yikes...

Owned..

#4 Post by Glenn D. » Sun Dec 20, 2009 4:43 pm

Wow, a lot of VW's

I've had far fewer but I still have time....

Oldsmobile "Omega" ... early 80's? Owned it for a day, but brought I't back to the (reputable) dealer the next day after the floor fell out from rust!! and they took it back!!

1982 Toyota tercel.... Best car ever, sold it after 7 years for 500$ its still on the road around Vancouver. I miss it.

1988 Suzuki Samurai hard top...Awsomeness. just like a "Japanese Series landrover"
slow and noisy and awsome off road I sold it for 1000$ plust some work on the defender. I miss it too.

1962 Toyota publica... was a gift, a restoration project, but I didn't have a garage and since there are like 2 in north america, parts were rather scarce. I re-gifted it. Perhaps its still on the north shore...Hmmm. I miss all my old cars.

1986 land rover 90. converted to 200 tdi. sort of like a bigger samurai (same colour too) Still is my daily driver.

This list doesn't include 3 of my parents cars I crashed or the 6 vespa scooters (and one lambretta) I have owned.

Wow, I feel like a child compared to the number of vehicles you guys have owned... oh well, here is the list, for what it is worth.

1984 Honda Scooter (ya, I really drove one for a few months)
1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Convertible
1987 Pontiac Firebird
1992 Plymouth Laser
1996 Ford Explorer [sigh-this was the worst vehicle ever]
2002 Chevy Trailblazer
2002 Honda Civic SiR
2007 VW Eos Hardtop Convertible (Still Own)
2008 Land Rover LR3 (Still Own)

Hey, that list isn't too shabby afterall!

My favorite ALL time vehicle? The LR3. Easy and no question. Although the two convertibles come in tied for second because there is just something about a convertible. The huge glass panes and sun roofs in the LR3 are close... Actually, the laser was a great car and the fire-chicken was nice too. Darn. I liked them all. Well, maybe not the Ford so much...

I'm going to keep the VW and LR3 until they both simply can't be held together for another second... Although, I'm sure that I've said that about every car I've owned at some point or other (except for the Ford)...

Can't wait to see what the future holds.

Yes, I did have the VW flu for a few years, but it wasn't anywhere near as contagious as this Land Rover virus.

I've been driving for 33 years so I guess that helps put it in perspective, too.

I wonder how many of our old vehicles are still on the road?

1959 ? (1972) Austin Cambridge, drove around the yard and used for parts, never licensed by me
1961 MGA (1972) all time nicest driving car I’d love to have another (My wife isn’t going to read this is she?)
1957 Land Rover 107 PU (1974) wonderful truck, used it for chasing motorcycle buddies on the mountains and DD
1969 GMC ½ t PU 6 cyl 3 on the tree, very sensible. (1975)
1963 Triumph Spitfire great and fun but not as great as the MGA (1975)
1962 Land Rover 88 SW, eventually got a Ford 289 installed. (1975)
1974 Harley Davidson 100 cc motocross bike (1975)
1976 Yamaha 400 XS (1977)
1977 Toyota Corolla (1977) 1st brand new car, worst car I ever had and it tried to kill me. It died after only 6 weeks. Lost a bundle from ICBC but got a good education about what scum insurance companies are. (Gee, do I sound bitter? I’ll never buy a Toyota again.) Only wreck I ever had.
1978 Yamaha 750 XS full dress (1979)
1960 VW bug (1980)
1976 GMC ¾ t 4X4 350 4 sp workhorse. (1980)
1981 Volvo SW new, went with the girl friend (1981)

1976 Ford ¾ t 2 wd (1984)
1978 Chev ¾ t 4X4 (1986) Workhorse, just like the 76 but 2 years newer (still have it in the backyard, my son owns it now.)
1980 Pontiac something (really small) my wife’s car (1980)
1980? Crown Victoria (1985)
1988 Olds 98 (1990) most breakdowns of any car imaginable. Worst car ever in the Lemon Aid book.
1992 Subaru Loyal SW (1991) great little family car, wife crashed into a lake and it was never the same.
1988 Suburban ¾ t 4X4 (1995) wonderful big family tank. If you can afford the fuel, get one.
1970 Land Rover 109 SW (1999) still driving her
2002 Dodge Dakota 4X4 (2002) for sale still have it
1990 Mazda 323 (2005) son has it now

1996 Ford ¾ t 4X4 (2008) Farm truck still have it
1955 Land Rover 86 SW (2007) future project car

nowhere near the first list , but...

1973 VW Bug...first car. became the master of Ebrake 180's in that thing.
1974 Toyota Corolla. owned for 6 months in new zealand.
1976 Dodge Tradesman Van. Slant 6. Bought for 500 bucks, then drove to mexico in it 4 days later...
1985 Toyota Celica. Owned for 2 weeks, then the parking lot it was in flooded with sea water up to it's steering wheel. actually drove it to work before it all turned chernobyl.
1984 Toyota Supra. Awesome car...thing went like hell.
1979 BJ40 Landcruiser. Owned this a loooong time. gradually became a
1982 BJ42 Landcruiser, after a rebuild with the help of a
1985 BJ60 Landcruiser, that I drove home carefully so the frame didn't brake in half, and used the guts to build the 42 and parted the rest.
1987 BJ70 Landcruiser, still my DD, got it for a song from a dumb kid, who didn't understand glow plugs  Finally fixing it up to be presentable.
1971 Fj40..project truck I gave up on and sold to a friend.
1975? Fj40 came as a package with previous 40, but traded to a buddy for a diesel for the other 40...
1976 FJ/BJ 45 Landcruiser Pickup, basically took parts from a 45, and combined it with the 40 I'd owned for years to make a diesel pickup. Sprung over, 35's, arb, turbo diesel. bigass money pit, put a ridiculous price on it, and 3 days later was cashing a cheque. guess I shouldn't complain, but I do kinda miss it.

196x 109. Unwanted half of a package deal, sold the hard top to DaveF,and the rest is now in Utah I think?
1971 109 5 door....much maligned. see sig...
1974 Porsche 914 2.0Le...I think it's mine...damn things been behind my barn for 5 years...
And last but not least,

1985 VW Scirocco. Converted to diesel, fuel turned waaay up, meth injection....goes like hell and needs fuel every two or three months.

LR - Volvo - VW

#9 Post by ANDYD » Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:25 am

This thread just reminded me of a conversation that was going around the table at the Christmas party that turned up a that most Land Rover owners have at one time or another owned a VW or a Volvo.

Then reading through the list I see it continues to be true :!:

Not sure if that's sad or cool ... 8)

I'll chime in on the VW comment as well. 2 years ago I bought and rebuilt a 1987 VW Westfalia Syncro, but it was quickly pointed out by my lovely wife that for all intents and purposes it mirrored the same role the Carawagon filled, and which one was I going to keep? In retrospect it would of been easier to find a new wife than another Syncro Westy..........

'79 mustang
'79 mercury capri rs (actually built for rally sport by previous owner, dangerous for a 16 year old to own)
'80 ford bronco
'81 cj 7
'87 suzuki samurai LWB 6" lift and 33's
'79 ford bronco (second owner, mint truck, really miss it)
'87 jeep cherokee 6" lift 33x9.50's (hate unibodies)

'87 vw syncro westy
'57 S1 107 station wagon (co-own with dad, or so I hope.....)
'57 S1 88

Various other crappy little cars too insignificant to remember.

1975 Olds Omega (Brothers girlfriend Wrote off when "borrowed it")
1980 Plymouth Reliant hatchback (sold)
1985 Pontiac 6000 (sold very cheaply)
1980 Datsun 720 4x4 with 300zx engine (sold as scrap)
2x Ford Focus ZX3 (both sold)
1972 Triumph spitfire (bought to restore... fell into dust and parts quickly)
1978 Triumph spitfire 1500 (almost completed restoration frame up - still own)
2006 Smart Four two convertible (still own)
2006 Mazda CX7 (Still own)

Loved my first car, left it at home for a few months when I went away (so my dad can use it) brothers girlfriend borrowed it and smashed a dozen parked cars before driving it headlong into a highway divider. I got it from a friends grandmother, had plastic on the seats, sat in the garage, Krager rims, loaded, was excellent condition... got five hundred for insurance...

sad

I hit a milestone in our D2 yesterday that I figured was worth sharing with you folks...

400,000 km
400K_photo.JPG
(349.46 KiB) Downloaded 11980 times
A few bits of trivia about what got me there...

I averaged around 15 mpg (imperial) every time I checked mileage, with the best being 20 mpg (trip to Moab) and the worst being 12 mpg (winter city driving) using mid grade fuel.

In L/100Km this is 18.8321, which means the truck used 75,328 litres of fuel.

At an average (estimated) cost of 1.30 for mid grade, that works out to roughly $100,000 of fuel!!!

Now about keeping the truck alive... I created this list for a friend a few months back that was looking at buying a D2. While a lot of work was done, most of it was DIY and so the cost of repair hasn't come close to the cost of fuel.

160K head gaskets (no valve grind, just clean and replace)
200K clutch fan - shattered blades due to mud hole
200K intake heater plenum replace (very small job)
200K waterpump
225K reweld Y pipe (cracked and split while off-roading)
240K crankshaft position sensor left truck stranded
250K head gaskets
260K coils and plug wires
350K head gaskets (primarily due to leaking valley gasket, heads weren't actually leaking)
350K replaced worn rocker arm assemblies with used
360K lower rad hose burst
375K timing cover to block gasket (replaced water pump at the same time, big job this one, but the bottom end of the engine remained untouched even though I had to take the pan and oil pickup off)

Non engine
left rear hub ABS sensor and harness
right front hub
brakes, shocks, springs numerous times
rear pinion seal
replaced transfer case at about 240K
replaced front drive shaft 2x (shoddy ujoint replacement first time)
starter
just going through bushings for the first time, rear done, front this winter

Also replaced the transmission about 2 months ago as it was showing signs of failure.

To Do this spring:
-high/low shifter not functioning due to a mistake made by the shop that put in the transmission
-more bushings
-lots of little accessories beginning to die now
-new shocks to be installed
-manifold to downpipe gaskets to be replaced
