Power steering V8 vs 300TDI steering pumps and shift levers
Hi Guys,
I'm having a problem with my power steering pump. I've bled it and done the steering wheel side to side up on jacks, engine up to temp and running at various speeds for about 5 minutes. Plumbing looks good and there are no leaks or kinks. But still it squeals like mad at any thing over 1000rpm and there is no assisted steering when the wheels are on the ground, all strong arm at the moment.
What I want to know is does the 300tdi run in the same direction and is the plumping the same as my old 3.9 power plant?
The 300Tid came with a PAS pump and made the same nasty noises right away when first started. So I swapped it out in 1/2 an hour for the one off the 3.9L, that was fine when I pulled that motor. So by rights it shouldn't be making such a fuss! But now I'm noticing silver in the fluid. Maybe it's old but I'm just seeing it now that the filler screen is out for the process.
So what gives?
And something different.
What's the correct length of the stick on a R380 manual gear box?
This one is about 6" long with a slight zig-zag to come up straight. There's a dimple about 1/2" from the top for maybe a lock thread but the grip doesn't have a bolt. This doesn't sit tall enough to get the hand grip above the plastic center console..So for now I've extended it. But is there a factory solution for extending the lever or is this perhaps a Defender box?

Hi Glen,
The steering pumps should be identical. I've got the V8 one running with my 200 tdi, and I've loaned a V8 one to guys with Defenders as well.
Not so sure about the shifter, though. Mine was the same with the LT77 – zigzag and dimple, but it had about a 6" extension above the dimple. The dimple is for the set screw on the extension. I think you're missing the extension piece.

Hi Red90,
that stick looks very long and probably be as tall as the dash radio if installed into a Discovery, for sure it's going to knock the coffee cups out the tray. No? Quick guess I would say that's a series truck lever.
Still having a pain trying to bleed this power steering circuit. Tried with out running the engine last night and swapped the pump that came with the diesel back in. Still no assisted steering.
On a positive, that awful screech had nothing to do with the pump or any other bearings on the front of the motor. It's all serp belt and some shrapnel rubber getting caught up in the grooves. So a fresh belt from Rover Tech sorted that right out. Thanks Don for your help on this.
Got the Tunnel riveted back in last night with a custom gaiter seal around the base of the shifter, so now no more hole to loose tools through :)
Any one know where to tap the signal to feed the Tac now that I've lost the Coil signal?

Sorry, that is the Defender stick. I thought we were talking about a Defender. The Disco has the same sort of thing, just a different size.

Hi,
So the Tac working like a charm. It's the Grey with white stripe off the original V8 harness that also went to the Alt. The temp sender is hooked up as well, Green with blue stripe, same same. So that is nice to see them working again.
But now the front power windows have defaulted into wind down mode, and won't come back up under their own power. Fuses are good, relay under the glove box clicks as it should, ground is there Hmmm... Might be a pinch some where that I haven't found.
Had to jimmy the leads with 12volts to get them wound up for the rain today, but this is a pain. The rear 2 seem to be fine up and down no problem.
Very odd to me was the 4x flashers went off while I was in there and the only way to clear them was to turn the ignition off,(had been on while testing wires) key out take a breath and then it stopped until about 5min late it started doing it again.
Still no luck with the power steering. :?
