200tdi starter motor for defender
Hey folks
looks like my starter motor is toast. I think I have to pull the turbo downpipe off to get it out. Anything to look out for when doing this or is it all straightforward wrenching?
also does anyone know what is the most likely problem with these starters? Is it usually the solenoid that fails on them like most of the North American starters?
Finally, if it trns out that it is the solenoid, will some off-the-shelf locally-available (Napa, Lordco) solenoid fit? Or is it some crazy Lucas part that only goes into British cars?
I am tempted to just bring it to Don, but since he is 3 hrs away I may take a crack at it first if I think I can get the parts in Hope or Chilliwack.
Not looking forward to wrenching in the mud and snow in front of the house though... for some reason it's not as much fun as it is on the trail.

:) When I took mine out it is a bit of a juggle but I found it quite easy. Once all the attachments were off I was able to snake it up through the top. My starter was absolute toast. If you have a good auto electrickery shop take it there. They have their own network and should be able to take care of it right away. The shop I go to for my rebuilds didn't even flinch when I told them that it was from a LR. They have even taken on relay rebuilds for my 39 yoa BMW motorbike with great success and not very expensive.
That's my experience. It seems that all things LR are rebuildable.
Cheers
