200 tdi Air Filter

For those of you running the 200tdi and defender air filter canister, where are you getting your replacement air filters? I have a Crosland 958 filter in mine, but was wondering if there is a readily available alternate from the local parts stores?

Hi Neil,

I was told when I did mine that many of the Defender and Discovery air filters are the same, and that Fram CAK253 was the one to get. Might want to give one of those a try.

Out of the box it has a plastic air cavitator that needs to be trimmed off, but test it for size first before you cut off the plastic in case you need to return it. I got mine in stock at Lordco here in Armstrong. They said it's fairly popular in diesel forklifts.

The Defender filter should have plastic on it with vanes. the way the air comes in it is important to have that.

That's what this one has, but I couldn't get it to fit in the airbox with the vanes. I'm due for another one, maybe this time I'll just trim the plastic vanes a little rather than cutting the plastic off completely. John, can you enlighten me as to why the plastic is there?

The air comes in radially from the side. If there is water in it or large particles, it will eat a hole through the filter. The plastic and vanes deflect and then spin the air to the outside of the can. This allows the water to drain and the large particles to fall down to the bottom. As a minimum, some form of deflector needs to be there, but the stock design is the best as far as air box design goes. The arrangement of the stock 200TDI Defender airbox has been done in a very specific and well thought out manner.

If it was just a plain cylindrical filter, the air should be ducting to impact the back end of the filter. You don't want the high velocity inlet air hitting right into a filter element.

With regards to those plastic vanes, the original filter I bought when I bought the canister, was wrapped in genuine LR packaging, and did not have the plastic vanes.

Seems strange.

Are you sure it was the correct part number for the Defender 200TDI? NTC6660? The Disco 200TDI filter is different and not finned.

Dave, do you have a Defender air box? As I see it, the Discovery ones do not have fins or plastic.

If someone comes up with the Fram P/N, that would be great.

Maybe thats why I had to cut off the fins. Try the part number I posted above, Fram CAK253... you can always return it if its not the right one.

Really common is Baldwin PA1667-FN

Bought the Fram CAK253 and it fits perfectly. I guess my old filter might have been for the disco? Thanks for all the help!

I have a k&N that I got through Rovers North but it doesnt have the plastic vanes. Luckily I didnt throw the old original away, so I will try to cut the vanes off and apply them to the K&N. I did notice that the filter would clog-up where the inlet is, very quickly, so I have been rotating the filter.

I just put in a Fleetguard AF437-KM. Same filter as the Case "bobcat" at work.

Yea I'm with Red 90 on this one, I dont think that the well liked K&N is a a good long term aplication for dusty, dirty conditions. It hard to beat a good stockish filter element.
