Spring (Shackle ) Bushings

#1 Post by Richard Elson » Sun Nov 07, 2004 4:24 pm

My parts manual says that the bushings for the rear spring shackle (Chassis side) should be either 1.187 OD or the regular 1.5. I mic'd the opening and it is about 1.040 - 1.080 that is front and rear (chassis side). What's up? Anyone have a crossover part number for a domestic auto. I was told to go to the axle/spring shop and just give them the dimensions I need.

I thought I would answer myself as this may come up for someone else. When I took the old bushings out (Too long ago to remember what I did) I left the outer casing of the bushing in. It was so rusted in that until I looked very closely with good light I could not tell that I had not cleaned it out properly. That was the difference in size.

That was exactly the response I was going to give you, but I thought only I would do something like that...

Great advice from the shop I hired to change my fram bushings: Put in poly! If they can't easily buy them, they can fabricate them to fit.

My accountant recommends the same.

The shop says that they know to NEVER take on a Land Rover bushing job EVER again.

Someone mentioned poly ones give a real rough ride. Anyone have poly in theirs? I usd to poly engine mounts in customized vws and there were 2 grades of hardness. The medium grade was great, but the hard grade moved all vibration of the engine to the chassis.

I kind of like the looks of these greasable poly ones:
