GPS Central - Outstanding

#1 Post by John » Tue Sep 21, 2004 9:16 pm

After much procrastinating (a year or so!) I finally decided that I should properly mount the laptop (used for GPS) in the Range Rover if for no other reason than for safety. I tossed around a few custom made ideas but in the end lazyness got the better of me and I decided to spring for a partially commercial product (I still need to fabricate a mount to the floor). I chose some of the RAM components available through GPS Central in Calgary (http://www.gpscentral.ca) .

As luck would have it the main component was out of stock when I called yesterday and of course I need the system installed for the Challenge in less that 3 weeks. The lady I spoke to thought that an order was due in that day but who can believe that! Regardless, I made my order and hoped for the best.

Well, you can imagine my surprise when upon arriving home tonight I found my order waiting for me! Not only did GPS Central come through but so did Canada Post!

Service like this is hard to come by these days but when I find it I have no problems passing the word.

Regards
John

John?
What software are you running with your GPS setup?
I just bought Garmin 18 GPS receiver and got Topos of BC on DVD from fugawi but I am debating on mapping software.
Does anyone out there have GPS TOPO Canada by Garmin??

Kris,

I bought Oziexplorer and the backroad mapbook digital edition. I think it works pretty good, only used it once so far, but Fugawi may be more user friendly software.

From what I have read the Garmin 18 will only work with it's own software or Fugawi. I didn't think thoughs fugawi maps would work with anything but Fugawi either.

There are lots of options out there, make sure the software you buy is "fully" capable of working with the gps reciever and software you already have.

Don

Kris,

I'm too cheap and I don't use the GPS enough to warrant a $$$ investment in software. I am using this

http://www.gpstm.com/

I can't compare it to other offerings but I like it well enough. Can't hurt to try it, it's free after all.

I found out that Fugawi topos can be only opened with Fugawi mapping software after I made the purchase.
I guess that would explain why it cost $100 for entire BC where other topos cost $100 for section of BC and there's about four sections.

are the backroad maps on CD same as the original ones in a book?

Yes, I believe they are the most current, but not in 3D, they are large precalibrated maps which will load directly into Fugawi, oziexplorer and mapsource.

I got an email back today from backroad mapbooks saying they are working with Fugawi to make 3D maps of there current digital mapbooks to be released in 2005.

Fugawi and Oziexplorer both have free demos on there websites.
