2a gearbox, knock in first

#1 Post by nick » Mon Jul 05, 2010 11:51 pm

Hey Guys.

I test drove a 1966 2a 109 this weekend. However the gearbox makes a knock in first gear. It's a constant knock, and gets louder and more rough sounding as the engine rpm increases. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts? The owner - who is a chap I know well - said it's been doing that for awhile, and usually just uses second instead of first.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
Nick

Gearbox knock

Hi Nick,

My guess would be a chipped gear tooth in the first gear.

Fairly easy to strip down and replace if you have some know-how.

Cheers,
Andy

Another member PM'd me with the same thoughts.
I've never rebuilt a tranny, but I'm not afraid of trying.
Thanks. I'll look into some pricing on that.

Curious, anyone know what a good used transmission typically goes for? Cheaper perhaps?
