Series 1 tune-up parts

So I am looking to get a 2 liter series one running better. Currently it will run but not well: sputters, back fires, lacks power. The compression is good go I am looking at improving the spark and fuel delivery (both of which are highly suspect right now due to the condition of the components).

Unfortunately the points are no longer made and the Lucas distributor used on the 2.0 is obsolete – even the antique part suppliers can’t provide anything but a rotor and cap. I was sent a 2.25 dizzy from a “rover part” supplier but it won't work (turns the wrong direction). Anyone know of a successful replacement dizzy for a 2.0? Pertronix maybe? Anyone have a NOS dizzy for a 1956 2.0?

Also I don't have the original carb (mine currently sports a Solex off of a VW beetle). Anyone have a good carb for a 2.0 or know of a good replacement alternative?

All suggestions appreciated.

When I owned my 1956 86" with a 2.0L engine. I fitted the Webber carb and it ran great. you can get this from Wise Owl Parts or try Jeremy at Rocky Mountain Parts.
As for the distributor, I believe you should have the Lucas 25D fitted which should be a very common distributor for alot of British cars. Heres a link for alternate part numbers for the Lucas 25D distributor(look under Electrical Components) these should be available form any auto parts suppliers.

Thanks for the info fellas. Looks like the original Solex carbs can be found but are very pricey so a Weber might be an option. Anyone try a mega-squirt fuel injection system on these motors?

The dizzy is a real odd-ball (only used for a couple of years on the 86 wheelbase series 1 from what I understand)- not a 25d (darn) and points needed are virtually impossible to find - have a lead on an antique supplier in BC but so far no luck. I am wondering if anyone has tried a pertronix upgrade in this type of dizzy?

Might have to look at switching to a 2.25 just to get better parts access, Anyone have a spare series 11 bell-housing for sale?

Yes. It will be a DM2 dizzy. They are used in many applications, MG, Triumph and more. I was talking to a guy last weekend about where he gets his points as, surely, something is available at Lordco (or NAPA). He gets his from Octagon Motors in Vancouver http://www.octagonmotorgroup.com/

I still think Blue Point must make something.

Craig Hunter at Hunters classic sports cars in Victoria can get you any parts for that dizzy. he deals with any and all parts related to british cars.

In my experience, the original Lucas parts fit better and operate correctly.

Yes, there are generic substitutes which happen to fit but the original equipment is best (which Holden or Dunsfold can supply). Another source is noslucas.com .

Just my opinion....mileage may vary etc....

Thanks for all the info - looks like I'll be tracking leads for some dizzy parts - seems the DM2 on the rover 2.0 is a bit of a rare bird but at least there are some suppliers still out there.

No joy on a carb yet as the OEM rebuild suppliers want a core (and for some reason aren't interested in a Solex off of a 1963 VW beetle - go figure) so I am still looking at other options. Have looked into the typical 2.25 carbs and alternatives (I have a Zenith 36IV on the shelf) but the base is different and I am hearing that they might over-fuel the smaller 2.0 engine. Any OEM series 1 solexs out there collecting dust?
