DIESEL POWER- Which one to replace a petrol?

If you had to replace a petrol engine with a somewhat affordable diesel, what would be the choice considering enough power to haul a 3000lb trailer and enough economy for a daily driver/off road (CRD only)

I'm in the process of fitting a 3.9 liter Volvo penta marine turbo diesel. Its big heavy and underpowered so should fit my rover classic well.
