Brake problem

Hi Guys,

I have a 2000 discovery 11 sine 2000 with no issues -just normal maintenance however the transmission temp light comes on when sitting at a light however when I start moving the light will go out when I reach 40 Ks, checked trans oil level all is OK also noticed when I'm parked in my driveway my emergency brake holds well when rover is cold however after driving the brake will not hold ----- any ideas would be appreciated !

Any leaking from the transmission or wetness at the back end of it? That may indicate a low transfer case, which could cause both the temp light as well as the slipping e brake when warm.

Did you check both the transmission and the transfer case levels? The transmission has to be checked cold from underneath, which is a bit different procedure than most vehicles. Just want to confirm that you've properly checked it.

Could it be a faulty temp sensor ?

Don’t know what would cause the parking brake issue unless it is not fully disengaging and heating up as you drive and causing it to slip when over heated (very unlikely).
Engine/transmission temp could be your coolers efficiency affected by cooling fins heavily coated in crud or perhaps blocked core.
I would also check the engine/radiator fan viscous clutch for proper lock-up.

I had a similar transmission temp light issue with my 99 Discovery I. It turned out the viscous fan clutch was not engaging fully. I changed it and have not had the light come on again. I can't say that's it for sure, but do check the fan clutch & cooling system in general, as PaulC suggests.

As for the brake...I would have pull the drum off and have a look! I've never had my Discovery drum off, but whenever I have a problem with my Series car, it's invariably oil.
