LR3 engine removal

I've done a bad thing. I bought an LR3 with a blown v6.

I'm going to dive into it this weekend. Any tips on pulling the engine? I do have a 2 post hoist so if pulling the body off is really the only way, it is an option.

I have pulled a 4.4L V8 without removing the body, so a V6 should certainly be possible. They are fairly difficult to get at the bell housing bolts, but take your time, leave the A/C and P/S lines connected and leave the pumps in the engine bay. Much cleaner and easier to get back up and running. Are you putting in another engine or rebuilding the original?

Not sure at this point. The previous owner seemed to think a rod had let go, which doesn't make any sense to me.

Plan right now is get it out, pull the pan, and have a look. If it's rebuild-able I'll do that. If not I'll get a long block from an Explorer and rebuild that.

Anything I need to look out for taking the front end apart?

Hi, never stripped one before, but as you said its just a Ford SOHC. Seem to remember that they have a weird 3 timing chain system, with no keyways, just taper gears. So special tool time. Plenty around though, so lots of resources and advice. Good luck.

I replaced one of those engines in my Explorer as just changing the timing belt required multiple expensive tools. PITA. How hard would it be to import the appropriate aged Diesel engine from Europe?

Oh no, Ray if I'd known you'd worked on this engine I would have hit you up for pointers! As it is the engine is rebuilt, back in and running. Now I just need to figure out the suspension, hill descent control and brake errors.

I thought about a diesel swap, but the engine's computer is so integrated with everything else I'd be better off getting a whole vehicle.

Yeah that’s kind of what I figured. I was actually looking at bringing in a diesel of that era from France before I ended up with the RRC.
