Rivet types

I’m going to be taking the trim off of the rear tub on my 109” and have it re galvanized but I’m wondering what type of rivets were used and how they are fastened when I go to put them back on?

These ones I assume are original:

They are solid aluminum rivets. You can get them and the air powered tool kit for compressing them from AircraftSpruce out of Ontario.

Someone online may have an appropriate tool kit that you could beg, borrow, steal.

Also, some of the UK dealers sell kits of rivets and tools specific to various land rover models.

They are 3/16” solid aluminum dome head rivets. The Land Rover parts manual states the correct lengths needed for each area on your truck. I just bought 100’s of 1” ones and cut them to length as needed. I got mine from Spaenaur. I think aircraft spruce only sells the truss head style which is flatter than the original dome head version. I just used my cheap air hammer you remove the spring and just use the proper rivet set with the dome head shape and a bucking bar on the tail end of the rivet to flatten it. (I just used an old sledge hammer head). Works fine you just have to be careful because the rivet set will fall out of the hammer gun if you tip it down.

Oh okay good to know. I’d like them too look as original as possible. What’s the best way to remove them?

I would use a good 3/16 drill bit. Drill from the domed head end if possible. Try to stay as straight and centred as you can. Just drill deep enough to take off the head. If you've drilled properly, you can often just tilt the drill and the head will snap off. Then knock the rivet out with a punch and hammer. This is how we do it on airplanes anyway.

The method mentioned above is probably the correct way to remove rivets. On a landrover you can be a little more primitive. I usual just use an old chisel and knock the head or tail ends off of the rivets, just try to use the chisel on the galvanized trim side to avoid gouging the aluminum skin. Once you have an end off you can usually knock the rest out with a nail set.
