Sunday November 5th Run

#1 Post by cbalme » Mon Oct 30, 2017 8:06 pm

Hi Guys, interested in getting out on Sunday as we haven't been out in a while. Maybe Glenora, Mt. Sicker or Mt. Prevost.

Suggestions are welcome.

Hi Colin and Andrew

I am interested as well but I need a ride. Where does everyone want to meet? Timmy's by the forest museum or a little further up the road maybe the Red Rooster café and go up that way? Maybe have breakfast first? What time?

This run is a go, so far there's 3 trucks.

Right now the plan is to visit Avatar Grove in Port Renfrew, there is a tree near it called "Big Lonely Doug" https://goo.gl/7dwoq4 and to get to it you need 4x4 so that would be interesting.

Since Andrew and Bruce live in Victoria I think we can meet down there at the Tim Hortons near Hatley Park
(1820 Island Hwy, Victoria, BC V9B 1J2) at 8:30 for a 9:00 Departure.

It's about a 2-hour drive from there to Port Renfrew.

Victor, I guess you're riding with us as per usual, but I can't guarantee shotgun.

Hi Colin

Sounds good I will be at your place around 7:30 am. Sunday morning.
I am trying to buy a 98 Range rover to use as a winter beater but do not own it quit yet, so I will need a ride.
I guess we will bring the usual recovery gear- radios, shovels, tow ropes, lunch, coffee, lawn chairs but maybe leave the suntan lotion at home this trip?

Hi Andrew, to clear up any confusion the address for the Tim's is 1820 Island Hwy, Victoria, BC V9B 1J2 and we're meeting at 8:30.

See you there!

Hello Everyone

Well that was a very interesting trip. For starters on Saturday night we were up in numbers by 25% to 4 rovers instead of the usual 3. By Sunday morning we were back down to the usual 3. Not a rover break down this time but an owner not feeling up for the trip. (Hope they feel better today.)

We started out from East Victoria about 8:45 heading to our destination of Port Renfrew to see one of the famous local tourist attractions. Things were progressing nicely until 7km from Port Renfrew, suddenly the second vehicle in the convoy lost its left front wheel at 70 kmh. The driver did a great job of keeping the rover out of the ditch as the left front end dropped to the pavement sparks flying. The wheel was long gone over the embankment ( we never did find it). The Disco sustained a fair amount of damage ripped up front bumper, damaged brake rotor, damaged wheel studs, bent front fender, slightly bent drivers door and maybe a few other things. The group got the spare tire onto the rover (with difficulty) and it was able to move under its on power to a safer location off the highway. Another Disco was dispatched to Port Renfrew to call a tow truck from Sooke. (No cell service in Port Renfrew). Funny thing the damaged Disco just had its new tires rotated at a reputable tire shop in Victoria on Friday, the wheel came off Sunday. Coincidence?? The remaining 3 wheels all got checked while we were waiting for the tow truck all were tight.

Anyway we had a nice lunch in the sunshine waiting for the tow truck, 2 hours later Andrew headed home on the hook and the rest of the group carried on to our destination. We think we found it (but are not quite sure) the scenery was great and we will return in the spring to explore more.
The 2 remaining rovers made it home safely although the second Disco seemed to be running on only 7 cylinders near the end of the trip.

So where are we going next? Any ideas? I think I will go check all my lug nuts...... on all my vehicles....... even the 2 wheelers..

Port Renfrew fiasco!

#16 Post by andrewd » Mon Nov 13, 2017 1:22 pm

Hello all,

I went back to the scene of the disaster yesterday and despite a torrential down pour and thick fog managed to find the wheel beside a creek about 50 feet down the bank. The inside of the alloy wheel is badly damaged but the near new tire looks to be in perfect shape. My Disco goes into the mechanics shop tomorrow so we will see what the damage costs to repair. I have also ordered a new HD winch bumper from Rovers North to replace the OME bumper that was damaged. That and the mechanical repairs will be paid for my good friends at the tire shop (name withheld to protect the alleged culprits dignity). Now, if anyone has a spare 18 X 8 alloy (or steel) wheel kicking around I will be that much closer to being back on the road!

Thanks,
Andrew D.

I heard the story this weekend, sounds like it was a harrowing experience. Kudos to you for safely controlling the vehicle to a stop! Sounds like a tough way to get a new bumper

Thanks Rob. I was very fortunate to keep it on the road, especially with my son along for the ride. Not something I ever want to experience again.

Wowzers... I'd rather be running on 7 cylinders than 3 wheels!

Fair play to the Tire shop for admitting their error - It's not the first time I've heard of wheels coming off right after a visit to a Tire shop...
